A catastrophic flash flood triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse has killed hundreds of people across Nepal and Tibet while leaving more than 1,000 missing.

Nepalese police reported 359 deaths as rescue teams searched debris-covered valleys, isolated villages and river systems. Hundreds of missing foreign visitors include pilgrims and tourists from more than two dozen countries.
The disaster began when a massive wall of ice, rock and mud collapsed into a mountain river near the Nepal–Tibet border. The resulting debris flow traveled approximately 50 meters per second, giving communities almost no time to escape.
Entire villages, roads, bridges, homes and power projects were destroyed. Helicopters have been deployed to search for survivors and deliver emergency supplies to areas cut off by the damage.
Authorities have also warned of another possible flood after the Bhotekoshi River became blocked and formed a rapidly rising lake. Residents and rescue teams along lower sections of the river have been urged to move to safer ground.
The death and missing-person totals remain preliminary and may continue changing as emergency crews reach isolated areas.
