LEGACY — SAMUEL MONROE JR. DIES AT 52

Actor Samuel Monroe Jr., remembered for his appearances in several defining Black films of the 1990s, has died at age 52.

Date: August 27, 2026

His mother, Joyce Patton, confirmed his death in a Facebook statement thanking supporters for their prayers and asking them to continue supporting Monroe’s family, especially his three children.

Monroe had reportedly been hospitalized for several months while suffering from complications connected to meningitis and MRSA pneumonia. His family previously said the illness spread to his brain and spine after allegedly going undiagnosed for an extended period. He was eventually placed on life support while undergoing treatment.

His acting career included appearances in Menace II Society, Tales from the Hood, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, Set It Off and The Players Club.

Although many of his roles were supporting performances, Monroe became a recognizable presence in an era of films that helped define 1990s Black cinema.
