GAMING — XBOX UNVEILS DISC-TO-DIGITAL ACCESS

Microsoft has officially announced a new Xbox feature designed to connect physical game ownership with the convenience of digital access.

Date: August 27, 2026

Players will be able to insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a compatible console and unlock a digital entitlement for that specific physical copy.

The entitlement remains tied to the disc. If the game is sold, traded or given to another player, the digital access moves with the physical copy instead of permanently remaining on the original owner’s account.

Microsoft says most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games can support the feature, although individual publishers will decide whether their titles participate. The company expects to begin with thousands of eligible games before expanding the program.

Xbox Insiders will begin testing the feature August 31. A broader rollout to supported consoles is expected in the coming months.

Eligible games may also become playable through Xbox Play Anywhere on PC or through Xbox Cloud Gaming, giving physical owners additional ways to access their libraries without abandoning the discs they purchased.
